DHEA is an abbreviation for dehydroepiandrosterone. This is a hormone which is made in the human body which is secreted by the adrenal gland. Many people believe that there is a connection with taking DHEA and IVF success due to its' effect on the sex hormones and, in particular, the possible "age-reversal" of the ovaries and eggs.
There is no doubt that fertility declines significantly with age and this is often believed to be one of the major reasons why pregnancies are not achieved either naturally or when using assisted techniques. The claims made by some pharmaceutical companies are that DHEA can "rejuvenate ovarian function" and help with IVF.
The specific claims relating to pregnancy are that DHEA can:-
* Increase egg and embryo counts and quality
* Increases number of healthy embryos
* Increases the number of natural pregnancies
* Improves IVF pregnancy rates
* Decreases the rates of spontaneous miscarriage
The taking of DHEA and IVF success rates showing an increase have been linked. However, much of the evidence is anecdotal and clinical trials have been limited. It is thought the reason for this is that DHEA is readily available and therefore there is little motivation for the companies to conduct expensive and time consuming trials.
A quick look at infertility forums will indicate many women who put their pregnancies partly down to the taking of this substance and will connect the taking of DHEA and IVF success together.
The best thing you can do is to speak to your IVF doctor who will be familiar with DHEA. Some doctors will recommend taking this prior to IVF cycles but it is important to be open and ask your doctor if it is appropriate in your case.
