5 Things to Consider When Selecting Baby Names

As soon as most parents find out they are having a baby, they start thinking of baby names for their tiny bundle of happiness. Naming a child is an important step and requires a great deal of thought. The name of a child is a long lasting thing and might affect his or her personality to a degree. Most parents want a lot of meaning behind their baby's name. For help the expectant couple can turn to baby name books, do an Internet search, visit the numerous websites that offer a lot of choices in baby names and their meanings. It can be exciting and fun to select a baby name but it certainly is not the easiest of jobs.

• There are unlimited choices in baby names. Sometimes parents even write down names they hear on television or read in magazines. Some parents name their baby after an ancestor or relative. Moreover, some families follow the tradition to name the first born son exactly after the father with "Jr." at the end. At times, this goes on for several generations with III, IV, and V being used following the name which can be a bit confusing outside of the family. These days though, unique names are more popular trend among new parents but be aware that these names haven’t yet survived the test of time and might turn into a ‘one-time-hit-wonders’.

When thinking of baby names parents must take into consideration that the name they give their child should not sound strange and awkward. Special names are alright but old fashioned and unusual names might sound silly in the future. Odd names make children shy away in their circle of friends and might be the target of other children's mockery.

• It would also be a good idea for parents to ensure the name they choose fits well with their surname. It’s nice to have a combination of both which is easy to pronounce and with reasonable length. As the surname is already a given and not much can be done about it, now is the opportunity to choose a long or a short first name so that some balance is achieved. If both are short, it can make a name sound insignificant and if both are long they might sound pompous. So it is better to choose one long and one short or both medium length names.

• To save the child from mockery by other kids later, parents must also think about what the name's initials represent like PC can mean personal computer or police constable. It might seem ridiculous to you now but for a school age kid it is a big deal and can cause a lot of frustration.

• It is always best to start thinking of the baby name early so that the expectant couple gets used to it. A lot of names sound really good at first, but in a couple of weeks or a month later they might lose their initial glamour – still plenty of time to reconsider and experiment with another name.

The name given to a child is the parents’ first gift to the baby and it lasts a lifetime; put thought and sensibility when selecting one.
