There are so many ideas out there for figuring out if your baby can read. You want to work hard and make sure that you provide this skill to your child, but you don’t want to quit your job to focus on it. Are there easy things that you can do to make this a possibility? Absolutely. Here are just a few tips and ideas to get you started.
Flashcards
A child’s brain really is like a sponge. You would be amazed to find out just how much they can achieve when given the opportunity. You don’t want to go overboard, but you can make flashcards of some common words that you use. When you realize that your baby can read, the smaller words can increase their difficulty. For example, if you have a pet you want to put the word “dog” or “cat” on a card. You can easily point to it.
Cards and Pictures
To make your flashcards even more effective you can add a picture on one side of the card and the word on the other. Show your child the picture and say the word. Then, flip it over and say the word again. You don’t have to do this for hours on end. If you are setting the goal of being able to say that your baby can read you can just do this for a few minutes maybe once or twice a day. It doesn’t take a lot of work at all.
Tape Cards to Items in the Home
In order to create more of a challenge you can tape the cards all around your home. Place cards on the doors, the tables, even the oven. It helps your child attach that word to the actual object. In time they will place those two things together and the word will be familiar to them. Eventually, when the see it in a sentence they will not only know how to say it, but they will also know exactly what that word is referring to.
Don’t Get Discouraged
Many parents believe that this is a skill that will be developed overnight. No matter what method you use, it does take time. Kids don’t go to bed one night and wake up with the announcement that your baby can read. Be patient. You don’t want the child to see that you are getting frustrated. Have a positive attitude despite the progress. If you don’t think things are going well, take a break from it all and just stop the work. You can always pick it back up at a later date.
Be sure that you are reading and that your child is reading as well. While you are doing most of the work this is beneficial for both of you. It creates moments for the two of you to bond and encourages a new skill in your child’s mind.
